The Helicoid Epoxy Sleeve In Detail

The Helicoid Epoxy Sleeve is a helically-wound, carbon-fibre reinforced, mechanically-interlocking strip composed of PE or HDPE. The 100mm wide PE strip has male and female locks, ensuring a strong and rigid pipe that will hold.

Both ends of the sleeve will ultimately be “capped” using polyamide endcaps. An annulus of approximately 40mm between the pipe and the inner-surface of the sleeve allows for an epoxy or cementitious grout to be filled, creating a pressure-containment and load-bearing system. Once fully-cured, the carbon-fiber sleeve, the epoxy grout and the pipe act as a composite section, whereby the sleeve isolates the pipe from further external corrosion or damage whilst simultaneously strengthening it.

The installation of the Helicoid Epoxy Sleeve will typically be done in the splash-zone area, utilizing the Helicoid Surface Preparation system which allows for diver-less installation, covering approximately 3.00 meters below and 3.00 meters above the Mean Sea Level. This is due to the fact that corrosion and damage to the pipe walls are more likely to occur in this area, resulting from the constant alternating exposure to water and oxygen, as well as the increased likelihood of damage from floating debris or vessel collision.

The Helicoid Epoxy Sleeve has been designed, tested and certified in accordance with the ASME PCC-2 and is an approved repair system under the ASME 31.4 and ASME 31.8.

The Helicoid Surface Preparation System

All installations of the Helicoid Epoxy Sleeve will first involve the cleaning of the pipe surface, through the use of the in-house developed Helicoid Surface Preparation System, capable of achieving surface cleanliness to ensure proper application and bonding of the Epoxy grout to your riser or conductor.

The system was created to ensure that the complete installation of the Helicoid Epoxy Sleeve remains diver-less and is able to remove rust, marine growth and neoprene liners and coatings up to 3.00m below the Mean Sea Level (MSL).

The lightweight equipment can be installed by a crew of 2 technicians and is capable of achieving thorough cleaning using high-pressure hydro-blasting equipment up to bare metal. The Helicoid Surface Preparation System ensures a surface profile on the pipe that enables the most effective surface onto which our epoxy grout can bond.

Overall, the system allows for easy, diver-less installation and efficient, semi-autonomous operation. A water-proof camera allows the user to monitor the progress and results of the surface preparation and ensure that the Helicoid Epoxy Sleeve has a proper foundation for successful installation.
